Malcolm Rock has written and directed for theatre, opera, ballet and radio.
Theatre highlights include Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Critic and The Bacchae for Autonomous Productions; Bombshells, Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Urinetown the Musical for Melbourne Theatre Company; The Magic Flute for Opera Piccola; and original ballet-operas Fade Not for The Australian Ballet and Tadzio for Melbourne Ballet Company both in collaboration with choreographer Remi Wörtmeyer (read the reviews).
Malcolm was awarded an emerging artist bursary from the International Foundation for Arts and Culture for his initiatives as Autonomous Productions artistic director. He was trained in puppetry and performance by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre founding artistic director Peter Wilson whose influence remains evident in Malcolm’s work to this day.
As an arts journalist and critic Malcolm has travelled to theatres and opera houses around the world on assignment for publications including Limelight, The Age and Dance Europe.
He has reviewed events at London’s Royal National Theatre, the historic Sadler’s Wells dance theatre and the Bregenzer Festspiele in Austria, and interviewed the likes of opera director Chen Shi-Zheng, ballerina Nina Ananiashvili and Juliette Binoche. His radio scripts and reviews have been broadcast on Austereo Network radio (92.9FM).
Malcolm was born in Edinburgh and lives between London and Amsterdam.
