Summary

Malcolm Rock was born in Edinburgh. He has written and directed for dance, theatre, opera and radio. His recent Dutch National Ballet creation Magdalene, or, In Defence of Beauty had its world premiere and subsequent revival at the Amsterdam Muziektheater (Stopera) and received its big-screen debut during the 2011 Cinedans Film Festival.

Malcolm was trained in movement and performance by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre founding artistic director Peter Wilson. He established youth theatre company Autonomous Productions for which he directed a variety of classic plays, danced and musical dramas. His efforts were awarded with a bursary prize from the International Foundation for Arts and Culture.
He joined Melbourne Theatre Company as resident assistant director to Simon Phillips (Love Never Dies, Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical) and developed the delicate and “enchanting” choreography Fade Not for The Australian Ballet. In Europe he continues to present work on some of the world’s largest and most prominent stages.
Malcolm is also an international arts correspondent whose dance and theatre writings have appeared in The Guardian, Time Out, Dance Europe and The Age, among others. His fiction is published by Fremantle Press and his scripts for broadcast were heard on Southern Cross Austereo radio.
